CLE Class: An In-House Perspective: Selecting Quality Outside Counsel for Patent Matters

James Arnold, Jr is Senior Counsel for BASF Corporation and General IP Counsel at BASF Enzymes, LLC, a subsidiary of BASF Corporation located in San Diego, CA and recognized in the white biotechnology space as a pioneer in the development and commercialization of high-performance enzymes for industrial processes. He earned his B.A. in Chemistry with honors from Talladega College; Certificate in Business Foundations from UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management; J.D. from Howard University School of Law where he served as Managing Editor of the Social Justice Law Review and LLM in Business Transactions with honors from the University of Alabama School of Law. As a former Chief IP Counsel of a Fortune 1000 electronics and semiconductor company and current General IP Counsel of an industrial biotechnology subsidiary of the world’s largest chemical company, he has extensive experience in monetization of intellectual property, management of outside counsel and legal budgets, and utilization of intellectual property to accelerate growth strategies within large, complex organizations.

 

Kae Gruner is Associate General Counsel for Acella Pharmaceuticals, LLC in Alpharetta, Georgia. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Hiram College, graduating with honors and joining Phi Beta Kappa. She then graduated from the University of Akron School of Law with her Juris Doctor and LL.M. in intellectual property. While in law school, she served as President of the student IP organization and participated in external trademark Moot Court competitions. Kae began her legal career as a patent attorney with Pearne & Gordon LLP in Cleveland, Ohio where she gained experience writing legal opinions relating to pharmaceutical patent documents. Prior to joining Acella, Kae managed a technology portfolio and negotiated patent license agreements and other contracts in the Office of Technology Transfer at Emory University in Atlanta. In her current role, Kae provides counsel to Acella and its affiliates on pharmaceutical, regulatory, intellectual property, contracts, and other legal matters.
